Bye Bye Javelin....................................2007-2011

Sold the Javelin in Nov., 2011 but here is her story.  Just did not have enough time, money and space for all 3 cars...........

During the summer of 2007 I got the bug to purchase a "humpster" as the 1971-74 Javelin has been come to be known in the AMC world.  My first new car ever was this this 1973 Trans Am Red Javelin I purchased when I started to work for Eastern Airlines in New Jersey.

I purchased this Javelin AMX via an e-bay auction in September of 2007; the seller was selling it for the widow of a gentleman he knew from his neighborhood in the Pittsburgh, PA area.  I loaded up my trailer and went to pick it up in a rainstorm in Pittsburgh.  Had a bit of a problem getting it on the trailer, it slipped off the ramps and damaged the spoiler.   So after I got it home I took it to
Then and Now restoration shop for some work.  They have done many award winning restorations, especially Buick GSX stage 1 cars you may even have heard their name mentioned on the Barrett Jackson auctions. .  I had them install a new front spoiler and I had also noticed that the hood paint did not look right, so I asked them to smooth it out.  They discovered the hood had a hood scoop mounted in it at one time and the cut out area had become weak where repaired.  The cowl induction hood is fiberglass over a metal structure and I had them repair that area as well.  Now that the spoiler was new and the hood had some work I had them put a new coat of paint on the car in the correct D-7, Trans Am Red paint.

The engine bay needed some work so I had George Doughtie, a long time AMC mechanic pull the engine and go over it.  He found all well with the engine; a mild cam had been installed at one time.  I obtained a vintage Edelbrock R4B intake manifold and I installed a new Edelbrock 600 cfm carburetor on top of it, which George mated to the engine. During this time I also acquired a correct T-10 4 speed transmission, the car originally had a 3 speed from the factory but I felt the 4 speed was much more correct for this car.

While this was taking place I began the work on the engine bay, it had been coated in what looked like a combination of undercoating and black crinkle paint.  It took me weeks to scrap and sand that off,  then painted the engine bay with it’s correct Trans AM Red paint.  New brake lines, master cylinder and new fuel lines were also installed.  Many parts were powdercoated, new gaskets installed in all areas, wiper motor was also restored as well and a new radiator was also installed.

I then turned my attention to the interior, replacing the seat covers, carpet and headliner ( I don't know why I did not take any pictures of that work but will when I take it apart again this winter to do more work to the interior).   I also put in a console with the correct 4 speed shifter plate.  I have also recently installed a new exhaust system and have had the original am radio converted to am/fm with rca inputs for my ipod.  I wanted to keep the stock look of the radio while improving its performance.

2009: More work with the tear down the interior (once again) and replace the heater core, fix a broken cable to the heater valve and repair the stuck open passenger side vent.  No longer do I get a rush of uncontrolled cold air during a fall drive and I also added sound deading material before replacing the carpet as well.  Still having problem with the cable, it is an inch too short and does not open the valve I think, but I do not drive it in cold weather so not very worried about it right now.

Like the AMX a year before, the Javelin traveled to Year One to be in a special show
featuring Chip Foose of TVs OVERHAULIN’ show in September 0f 2008

I presented Chip with a special AMC OVERHAULIN’ display which I made for him.
If you have ever seen the show you can imagine it is the only way an AMC will ever appear on OVERHAULN’

November 2, 2009 saw my Javelin AMX on the showfield at the Hilton Head Concours d'Elegance in Hitlon Head, SC where it earned a Palmetto award in the pony car class.  Here are two pictures but to see more go to the show page.

In July, 2009 the Javelin AMX traveled to St. Louis, MO to the American Motors Owners Association International convention where it earned a Junior concours Gold award and scored enough points to be advanced to the senior level of that organizaiton.

2010:  In another step to return the car to "as original looking as possible" I have now added a new battery topper that AMARK has just come out with.  It goes over a sealed battery, you have to paint the battery body white, then paint in a liquid line near the top to simulate the acid level.  While they make reproduction AMC batteries for the earlier cars (I have one in my AMX) this is as close to original that I can get for the Javelin AMX.

At this time I also found and installed a duel snorkle aircleaner top.  While not a factory piece it is a very well made copy, only used in 1971 and is one of the most rare items to find at any price. I think it looks really good on top of the R4B manifold.

Cowl induction aircleaner as it came from the factory below and the new dual snorkle top added in 2010, I think it looks much meaner!!
